It was finally over. She had finished her battle with the Reapers, and with her final sacrifice the universe would be eternally safe.
"I don't need anything else", Shepard though as her consciousness faded away, "It's fine this way. I'll miss them all, but it's fine this way."
She smiled, and then everything went black. There was no more pain, no more fear and no more regrets. Her mission was over, she had won. And with that in mind, Shepard welcomed death like an old friend...
Suddenly the soothing emptiness was breached by a wave of images. Blinding lights, strange figures and locations, rushed through her mind too fast for her to recognize. It was an armada of information that was trying to tear her head apart. And little by little that force managed to tear away the darkness surrounding her. The light shining through the holes in the darkness impaled her like spears, and the sudden vastness of the outside world felt terrifying. She didn't want to leave this place; she belonged to the shadows now. But she couldn't resist. She could only watch as her place of peace was torn down, until there was nothing left to protect her.
She was surrounded by a sea of unknown, everything that was familiar and comforting was gone. Those images, strange creatures and symbols, horrible acts of violence and savagery invaded her very being and filled her existence with nothing but fear and confusion. And those feelings clouded her thoughts, covering her memories into a cloud of chaos. She was losing herself, and there was nothing familiar to grasp on to. She screamed again, in both terror and agony. She prayed for the darkness to take her back.
But then, a voice…
"SHEPARD!"
The voice boomed inside her head. And in that voice, she recognized something, something familiar. And the voice swept across her consciousness, the pain and panic disappeared. The images that filled her became clearer, more recognizable. She managed to grasp a piece of her mind, and using that piece, she spoke out one simple question...
"Who are you?" Shepard asked with exhaustion.
"I am a living memory left inside your mind, to protect you from harm. I am the greatest weapon of our race, and our biggest disappointment. I am Kiav, the final gift of the Protheans. "
"A living memory, like some kind if a VI? "
"Yes, in a way. I am package of information transferred into your mind to both protect you from the Reapers, and to ensure your awakening after the process has been reversed."
"Process? What process?!"
"The indoctrination."
For a while Shepard was quiet. Her mind started to feel familiar again, but this answer took her by surprise. It took her a while to go on.
"I've been… Indoctrinated?"
"Yes, you have. It was inevitable, with your numerous encounters with the Reapers. You might not have noticed it, but each of them has gradually advanced your indoctrination process. Though you might have noticed the symptoms by now; those strange hallucinations and nightmares, that were a bit too intimidating to be just dreams. Your encounter with Harbinger was the last straw, and with both your body and your mind at their limit, you were broken and dragged into the darkness. "
"Did you… Did you come from the beacons?"
"Yes, some the beacons that we left behind were filled with not only our last warning to the future cycle, but also with the information required to reverse the indoctrination process."
Shepard didn't want to believe what the VI said, but it was hard to deny it. She cursed herself for falling into the Reaper's trap. Still, at the same time, something bugged her.
"What about Saren?" she asked, "He came in contact with the beacons also, how come he became indoctrinated?"
"This 'Saren', the Turian that served the Reapers, was already indoctrinated when he acquired the beacon's knowledge. There was nothing that could've been done to help him. This information, a code that can undo the indoctrination, is the secret weapon of the Prothean scientists. It was conducted in secret and nobody outside the research team knew about it. We had hoped to be able to use it against the Reapers ourselves, but we were too late. After the information had been uploaded into the beacons, the scientists gave their lives to ensure the safety of their secret. If Reapers were to learn about this before time was right, all that work would've been for nothing."
Shepard stayed quiet. She felt calm again and her mind had finally become her own. And with that, she could recognize the images that had tormented her before. They were images of earth, torn to pieces by the Reaper attack, and images of her friends, fighting for their cause against the Reapers. And that realization filled her with confidence and strength once again. The Reapers might've almost managed to destroy her, but she didn't feel like feeling sorry for herself because of that. She felt like fighting.
"Fine, so you managed to save my ass, and I'm grateful of that. What now?"
"Now that you have your mind in control, you will be awakened to continue your fight. The Reapers cannot control you anymore, but this is the only help we can give you. The rest of the fight you have to fight by yourself."
The images became to fade, as did the bright light surrounding Shepard. Behind them, hazy shapes started to appear. But these were more familiar, more real than the others. And as she felt her consciousness being lifted back to the outside world, Shepard spoke her last words to Kiav.
"You're wrong about that. I don't have to fight alone; I have friends to fight alongside of."
